For most of the year hydration advice in the Philippines is ordinary advice. From roughly March to May it stops being ordinary, because the heat index in much of the country moves into ranges where the body's cooling system is working against the weather rather than with it.
This article is about that period specifically, and about the point where sensible habits stop being enough and become a safety matter.
General information, not medical advice. Heat stroke is a medical emergency — confusion, collapse, or hot skin with sweating having stopped needs emergency care immediately, not fluid.
What the heat index is telling you
PAGASA publishes a heat index — apparent temperature — which combines air temperature with humidity. It is the more useful of the two numbers here, because humidity is what determines whether sweating works.
Sweat cools you by evaporating. In humid air it evaporates poorly, so the body produces more of it to achieve less cooling. That is the whole mechanism, and it is why 34 degrees here is harder work than 34 degrees somewhere dry — set out at greater length in hydration in a tropical climate.
Who this lands on hardest
Anyone in an air-conditioned office all day is the least affected group, and is also the audience most hydration advice is written for. Worth noting when deciding whose advice to take.
What actually changes in these months
- More fluid, spread out. Not a bigger evening glass — steadily through the day, which is the whole argument in building a hydration habit.
- Cold, and insulated. Warm water in a bag does not get drunk, and in this climate that is the difference between carrying water and drinking it.
- Shift the timing of anything physical away from the middle of the day, which is worth more than any amount of drinking.
- Salt, but only in the narrow case. Heavy sweating for hours genuinely needs sodium replacement; a warm afternoon does not — electrolytes and when they actually matter.
- Watch the household, not just yourself. The people at most risk are the least likely to say anything.
Food does more of this work than people expect — roughly a fifth to a third of most people's fluid comes from what they eat, and it rises with fruit in season, per how much water comes from food.
The signs that matter
Worth knowing properly, because they are the part of this subject where being wrong has consequences.
Heat exhaustion presents as heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, headache and cool clammy skin. The response is to stop, move into shade or air conditioning, cool down and take fluid — and it should improve.
Heat stroke is different and is an emergency. Confusion or altered behaviour, a very high body temperature, skin that is hot and may have stopped sweating, and collapse. The response is emergency medical help and active cooling while waiting — not water, and not waiting to see whether it improves.
The household side of a hot month
Two practical things. Water supply is less reliable in these months in some areas, which makes stored water worth having and worth storing properly — storing drinking water safely at home.
And the aircon runs for far longer, which is the largest line on a household electricity bill and the one worth attacking by hours rather than by thermostat — the energy your appliances actually use.
